Mechanism Of Action Of Risperidone

• Though its precise mechanism of action is not fully understood, the current focus is on the ability of risperidone to inhibit the D2 dopaminergic receptors and 5-HT2A serotonergic receptors in the brain.
• Schizophrenia is thought to result from an excess of dopaminergic D2 and serotonergic 5-HT2A activity, resulting in overactivity of central mesolimbic pathways and mesocortical pathways, respectively

• Risperidone belongs to a group of medicines called ‘antipsychotics’ and is used to treat the following:

1. Schizophrenia, where you may see, hear or feel things that are not there, believe things that are not true, or feel unusually suspicious, or confused
2. Mania, where you may feel very excited, elated, agitated, enthusiastic, or hyperactive. Mania occurs in an illness called “bipolar disorder”
3. Short-term treatment of long-term aggression in people with Alzheimer’s dementia, who harm themselves or others. Alternative treatments should have been used previously
4. Short-term treatment (up to 6 weeks) of long-term aggression in intellectually disabled children (at least 5 years of age) and adolescents with conduct disorder.

• Always take risperidone exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Your doctor will decide on your starting dose. The maintenance dose (daily dose) will depend on your illness and needs
