Mechanism Of Action Of Loperamide 2 Mg Capsules

• It helps reduce diarrhea by slowing down an overactive bowel, which helps the body to absorb water and salts from this organ, making the stools more solid and less frequent

Therapeutic Indications Of Imodium Capsules

• Loperamide is used to treat sudden short-lived (acute) attacks of diarrhea in adults and children aged 9 years and over and long-lasting (chronic) diarrhea in adults.
• Diarrhea: loose, watery, and possibly more-frequent bowel movements (more than 3 times daily)

Method Of Administration Of Imodium Capsules

• Short-lived (acute) diarrhea:

1. Adults and children over 12 years: Take two capsules, to begin with, and then one capsule after each episode of diarrhea for up to 5 days.
2. Never take more than 8 capsules in any 24 hours.
3. Children aged 9-12 years: Take one capsule 4 times daily until diarrhea is controlled or for up to 5 days.
4. Never take more than this dose.
5. Children aged under 9 years old: This medicine should not be given to children under 9 years old.

• Long-lasting (chronic) diarrhea

1. Adults only: Your doctor will tell you how much Loperamide to take.
2. The initial dose will probably be between two and four capsules per day taken in divided doses but will depend on each individual's needs.

• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice To Reduce Diarrhea

• Taking a probiotic supplement or eating probiotic foods like some brands of yogurt may also stop diarrhea.
• Add semisolid and low-fiber foods gradually as your bowel movements return to normal. Try soda crackers, toast, eggs, rice or chicken.
• Drink plenty of liquids, including water, broths and juices. Avoid caffeine
• If you’re lactose intolerant, diarrhea may develop after eating dairy products. These include milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt.
• If you’re sensitive to artificial sweeteners, you may have diarrhea after eating foods or drinks containing these sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are found in diet drinks, sugar-free products, chewing gum, and even some candy.
• Diarrhea is sometimes a symptom of digestive disorders. You might have frequent bouts of loose stools if you’re diagnosed with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
• Diarrhea caused by a virus or bacterial infection is contagious. You can protect yourself by:

1. washing your hands frequently
2. avoiding sick people
3. disinfecting commonly touched surfaces
4. not sharing personal items

• You should also see a doctor if you have:

1. a fever above 38.9°C
2. bloody or black stools
3. Prolonged Diarrhea

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Imodium Capsules

• Stop using Loperamide and tell your doctor straight away if you notice or suspect any of the following:

1. Sudden swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Hives (also known as nettle rash or urticaria).
2. Severe irritation, reddening or blistering of your skin. These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction
3. Blistering of your skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals
4. Stomach pain or severely swollen stomach
5. Severe constipation
6. Loss of consciousness or reduced level of consciousness (feeling faint)

Storage Conditions Of Imodium Capsules

• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
