Mechanism Of Action Of Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Ampoules

• Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid available in various modes of administration that is used for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions, including bronchial asthma, as well as endocrine and rheumatic disorders.

Therapeutic Indications Of Dexamethasone Sodium Ampoules

• Dexamethasone reduces inflammation and suppresses the immune system and is used normally for patients with:
• severe allergic reactions causing swelling of the face and throat, low blood pressure, and collapse (angioneurotic edema and anaphylaxis)
• shock caused by infection or severe tuberculosis (also with anti-infective treatments e.g. antibiotics)
• raised pressure in the skull caused by tumors or infantile spasms
• Sometimes, the injection is given into the painful area itself e.g. inflammation of the joints (rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis)

Method Of Administration Of Dexamethasone Sodium Ampoules

• Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
• Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Your doctor or nurse will inject you.
• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Undesirable Side Effects Of Dexamethasone Sodium Ampoules

1. Stomach upset, heartburn, headache, trouble sleeping, increased appetite, or pain/redness/swelling at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
2. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
3. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including signs of infection (such as sore throat that doesn't go away, fever), bone/joint pain, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, eye pain/pressure, vision problems, unusual weight gain, puffy face, swelling of the ankles/feet, symptoms of stomach/intestinal bleeding (such as stomach/abdominal pain, black/tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds), mental/mood changes (such as depression, mood swings, agitation), menstrual period changes, muscle pain/cramps, weakness, easy bruising/bleeding, slow wound healing, thinning skin, seizures.

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
• Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Dexamethasone Sodium Ampoules

• You should also tell the doctor if you:

1. have symptoms of tumor lysis syndrome such as muscle cramping, muscle weakness, confusion, visual loss or disturbances, and shortness of breath, in case you suffer from hematological malignancy.
2. suffer from kidney or liver problems
3. suffer from diabetes or a relative has diabetes
4. suffer from or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer
5. suffer from osteoporosis (thinning and, weakness of the bone)
6. suffer from heart failure or have had a recent heart attack
7. suffer from high blood pressure
8. have suffered from muscle weakness with this or other steroids in the past
9. suffer from glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye) or a relative has glaucoma
10. have previously had amoebiasis (an infection that is specific to tropical countries and causes diarrhea)
11. suffer from epilepsy
12. suffer from schizophrenia
13. have previously had tuberculosis
14. suffer from myasthenia gravis (a disease-causing weak muscles)
15. suffer from an eye infection with the herpes virus

• Store below 25°c
• Don’t refrigerate
• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
